WHY STEM?
The State of Maryland has a tremendous interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Maryland is the home of some of the most prestigious federally-funded research and development facilities in the country, as well as several major research universities. However, according to the recent task force report on STEM education commissioned by Governor Martin O'Malley, Maryland has approximately 6,000 STEM-related job openings a year while the state only produces approximately 4,000 STEM graduates. This is one of the largest STEM workforce deficits among Maryland's competitor states. The numbers for African Americans and women graduating in STEM-related careers are abysmal. This innovative Conference and Expo will give you the chance to find discover what Science, Technology, Engineering and Math can offer you.
